Many of y’all ARASHI stans (or Arashics) may be familiar with the variety show “Arashi ni Shiyagare” (嵐にしやがれ). During the Death Match part of the episode last week, a dish for sure caught our attention: Tamago Kake Gohan (Japanese-style raw egg with rice). This tachinomi (standing bar in Japanese) bar in Ginza is called Shimada, a bar without chairs makes the space more open and chill, definitely a good place to go if you are in Tokyo!
Tamago Kake Gohan is a sort of comfort food for many Japanese indeed. If you have yet to give it a try, we definitely recommend you trying it! Nibbles and finger food are many people’s go-to while drinking sake but without some carbohydrates, drinking alcohol can be quite damaging to your stomach. To have a bowl of warm and chewy rice while drinking is just as mouth-watering as it sounds.

As most of us can’t visit Japan at the moment, we have jotted down the easy recipe for you to try it out while you drink at home:
One bowl of cooked rice
One raw egg (choose the brand you trust to avoid food poisoning!)
Some Parmesan cheese
Prepare the Tamago Kake Gohan by adding the egg yolk to the cooked (and warm!) rice, then add some Parmesan cheese on top, mix well and serve! You can also add some soy sauce for more flavour.
Remember to choose eggs that are edible while raw, otherwise the taste may be unpleasant, or worse, there is a risk of getting food poisoning!

You can also give this recipe a twist by adding scallion or natto. The taste of natto can be controversial, but if you a fan of natto, adding it to your Tamago Kake Gohan will be a good choice. This recipe goes well with sweet or dry sake so you can experiment it with the sake you got!
